Digital Photograph
The Japanese crane or “Tancho” as it is known in Japan, is the bird of happiness and long life. Over half the world’s population can be found near Kushiro on the island of Hokkaido and they are particularly beautiful to see during the snowy months when they also perform their amazing dating dance!
The weather when I took these photographs was seriously cold but seeing these magnificent birds out in the snow dancing was very special. We made an early start out into the freezing snow of Hokkaido in our little Japanese hire car which was not really the ideal tool for tackling snow drifts. We headed off in search of cranes. No sun, -20 degrees, it was truly artic. When we finally found some near a river bank the sun appeared and the experience was magical.
